Installing and Uninstalling CrashPlan
Can I rename my CrashPlan app on Mac?
- No you cannot rename it. The app’s name must stay as CrashPlan.app. It must also reside under applications.
How do I uninstall the CrashPlan app?
- For Mac, run the uninstaller by opening the installer.dmg file.
- For Windows, go to Add/Remove programs.
- For Linus, look for the uninstaller shell script on your installer package.
CrashPlan’s 30-Day Trial
When does the CrashPlan 30-day trial begin?
- The trial begins on the day you install the trial version on your computer.
I would like to continue using CrashPlan, how do I do this?
- You will have to subscribe to CrashPlan+ and choose which plan works best for you.
What if I do not subscribe after the trial expires?
- Your data will no longer go to CrashPlan Central and you will no longer be able to restore all files that you backed using the CrashPlan app.
CrashPlan License and Subscription
What’s the difference between CrashPlan+ and CrashPlan?
- CrashPlan is ad supported and only does backs up once a day. This app uses 128-bit encryption. CrashPlan+ on the other hand uses 448-bit encryption, has backup sets, offers flexible retention and backup settings to the user, has upgrades, web restore and continuous backup up to once for every minute. CrashPlan+ subscribes are also prioritized by CrashPlan’s support system.
How is my subscription licensed?
- It comes with either monthly or annual subscription options.
CrashPlan Renewal and Cancellation
Will CrashPlan notify me once my subscription has expired?
- You will receive a notification through your email a week before the app expires. If you allow your app to expire, you will receive a notification as well.
How do I cancel my subscription?
- Go to your CrashPlan+ account at www.crashplan.com and click the Cancel button next to the plan you would like to cancel.
Switching/Reassigning
Can I switch to a different plan or subscription under CrashPlan?
- Yes you can. Instructions on how to do this can be found at the website by logging into your account and accessing My Account.
Is it possible to transfer my CrashPlan+ license to a different computer?
- Yes. All you need to do is copy and paste the license information to the computer you would like to use.
What if I decide to change which account one of my computers is registered?
- You can do this by issuing the deauthorize command. Be reminded however that this will have you starting from scratch.
CrashPlan Central
Does the app back up files to an offsite location?
- Yes. CrashPlan Central is the offsite storage for CrashPlan customers. We do this by storing your data in highly secure storage centers. We offer multi-destination storage both onsite and offsite.
I use CrashPlan Central as backup, can I have my files shipped to me through an external hard drive?
- If this is needed ASAP, we can ship your data to your doorstep through a USB drive. This service however is currently available to US customers only.
Connecting and Networking
Do I need to reconfigure my firewall to accommodate the CrashPlan app?
- This application tries its best to be installed without much configuration. You may need to adjust your settings however whenever you purchase an upgrade.
Do I have to access your servers to use the app?
- Yes but if you do not want to rely on CrashPlan’s servers for connection, you can subscribe to CrashPlan PRO. This version is best for businesses.
It says “Destination unavailable” in the history, what does this mean?
- This means that the location you are looking for does not exist or is not valid. This could mean that you do not have access to this destination or the drive is not mounted.
Backup
What time does CrashPlan back up?
- CrashPlan backs up once a day by default. For CrashPlan+, it backs every 15 minutes.
Can I adjust the settings so that the app does not backup automatically?
- It will always back up automatically; the software was designed this way to protect your files from human intervention.
How long does CrashPlan retain deleted files?
- They will be in your backup archive forever unless you remove files from your backup selection.
Restore Using CrashPlan
Which files are restored first?
- Files are restored from the top of the tree going down. This means that CrashPlan will restore files the way they are ordered in your computer.
How can I restore from old archives through a new installation?
- You should reinstall the application and reconnect to the existing archive.
CrashPlan Security
What types of encryption do you use?
- The free version uses the 128-bit Blowfish to encrypt files while CrashPlan+ uses448-bit Blowfish encryption.
What happens if I decide to upgrade?
- You can have 128-bit encrypted blocks with 448-bit ones in the same backup. They can co-exist.
General CrashPlan Questions
What’s up with the blue and green color schemes? What do they mean?
- CrashPlan uses green for all things related to CrashPlan and CrashPlan+. Blue is used for CrashPlan PRO.
Will I get alerted if the application cannot back up?
- Yes. We will send you an email once this happens. This will only occur however if none of the destinations have full backups.

Are your plans really unlimited?
- Yes of course. No file size limits and no file type restrictions. We also have no bandwidth throttling.
How do I know you will not cancel your unlimited plans the way Mozy did?
- We committed to providing unlimited backup plans and we have no plans in changing that policy.

How do I compress log files?
- This is essential if you are calling Support because they may require you to send your log files. To compress with a Mac, control-click on Library/Logs/CrashPlan and select Compress then Create Archive. For Windows, right-click the folder or file in question then Send To Compressed (zipped) Folder.
